Covering 55,000 km², the Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected area in Africa, offering a wide variety of landscapes and environments, ranging from shrubby savannah to grassy plains to open forests and mountain ranges.
Its landscapes are influenced by the strong presence of water, notably the Rujifi River, the largest river in Africa, creating an environment very different from what can be found in the country’s other national parks. Here, the feeling of isolation and immersion in the wilderness is one of the most compelling you can experience in Tanzania. Apart from the tourist trails that were developed for 4-wheel drive vehicles, the landscapes of the park have remained unchanged since ancient times.
In terms of wildlife, a safari in Selous will allow you to observe a large number of species, including all the main predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas. Huge herds of buffalo and hippos also roam the reserve, whilst the largest population of elephants on the African continent call Selous their home.
One of the main features that sets Selous apart from other parks, is the possibility of going on a boat safari. In addition to the tranquillity one feels while on the water, boat safaris allow the traveller to observe the aquatic animals from up close while surrounded by exceptional scenery.
To truly immerse oneself in the wilderness, the Selous Game Reserve offers walking safaris accompanied by an armed ranger. These safaris allow unexpected encounters with wild animals such as buffalos and even elephantys.
Best time to visit Nyerere National Park
The best time to go on safari in Nyerere is the dry season from June to November. During this time, the animals are concentrated around the waterholes making it much easier to observe them, especially in September and October.
In June and until the beginning of July, at the end of the rainy season, the high water allows boats to use the branches of the Rufiji River to join the Mzizimia, Siwandu, Nzerakera, Manze and Tagalala lakes, thus offering a complete journey through this unique ecosystem.
