Situated southwest of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park covers 3,230 km². It borders the Selous Game Reserve to the south and is a huge migration area for many animal species. Surrounded by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountains, its beautiful landscapes and numerous waterfalls delight its visitors. The park is home to a wide variety of animals: more than 2,000 elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, wildebeests, zebras, warthogs, civets, jackals, yellow baboons, antelopes, leopards, cheetahs and over 400 species of birds.
If you are lucky, you may also come across the rare black hippo, greater kudu and wild dog.
A popular weekend destination from Dar Es Salaam, Mikumi National Park attracts relatively few foreign travellers despite its beauty and extensive wildlife.
Best time to visit Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park can be visited all year round, but the best time is the dry season which runs from June to October. During this period, animals are concentrated near waterholes, which makes it easier to observe them.
